What is Eyelid Surgery?

Men and women from all walks of life have come to Peoria Cosmetic Surgery to learn more about blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). The delicate and thin skin of the eyelids usually shows the signs of aging earlier than other parts of our face. Unfortunately, all the caffeine in the world won’t make you look awake and vibrant if you have excess, sagging skin on you upper or lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery is an excellent choice for people who are in search of a lasting way to freshen and rejuvenate their eye appearance.

Blepharoplasty consistently ranks as one of the top five most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the country. This is because it is a smaller surgical procedure that does not take a great amount of time and causes little discomfort, yet can provide significant cosmetic benefits. It is important to recognize however, that the eye area is very delicate, and that precision and experience in surgical technique is very important in achieving optimal results.

Eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure, offered by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Shaili Gal, that is designed to improve the appearance of the eyelids. This procedure can address common signs of aging, such as sagging skin, excess protruding fat, and wrinkles around the eyes.

Eyelid Surgery Candidates:

Candidates for eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, are typically men or women who are bothered by signs of aging in their eyelids and want to achieve a more youthful and refreshed appearance. Some common reasons why a person may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery include:

  • Heavy hooded look to the upper eyelids, ie. upper eyelid skin that is sitting on your eyelashes
  • Restore a more open, alert appearance to the eyes
  • Refine definition to the upper eyelid crease
  • Improve vision, if sagging skin is impairing your visual field

Candidates for eyelid surgery should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations for the procedure.

Frequently asked questions

Your Eyelid Surgery Consultation

Before the procedure, the patient will have a consultation with Dr. Gal to discuss their goals and expectations. Dr. Gal will review the patient’s medical history and perform a physical examination to determine the best approach for the surgery.

Your Phoenix area Blepharoplasty Surgery

Eyelid surgery at our greater Phoenix area practice can remove excess skin from the upper eyelid area or bulging fat pads from the lower eyelid. It is also frequently performed in conjunction with other cosmetic surgery procedures such as a brow lift or facelift. By combining procedures, patients can avoid additional fees, surgeries, time under anesthesia, and minimize their overall down time.

Recovery after Surgery

Most people who choose blepharoplasty in the Phoenix area enjoy a fast and comfortable recovery. The patient will be given specific post-operative instructions to follow, including how to care for the incision site and when to resume normal activities. Every patient experiences at least some swelling for several days, and light bruising usually does occur. Discomfort is usually minimal and can be easily managed with pain medication and the bruising and swelling can generally be concealed with makeup. You’ll return to the office after a few days to have your stitches removed and review your progress.

Some people have dry eyes for a few weeks after their surgery which in most cases can be resolved with over-the-counter eye drops. Patients are usually ready to return to work within 5 to 7 days. Upper eyelid surgery incisions are hidden within the folds of the lids whenever possible to minimize visible scarring. Lower eyelid surgery can sometimes be performed through the inside of the lower eyelid, thus leaving no visible external scar.

Other Facial Surgery to Consider

Often, people will come to our Phoenix area office requesting upper eyelid surgery when they would actually obtain a better and more natural result with a brow lift procedure, or brow lift combined with blepharoplasty. In these cases, the eyebrow has descended under the effect of gravity and facial muscle action, thus pushing extra skin onto the upper eyelid.
By elevating the position of the eyebrows, Dr. Gal can eliminate most or all of the appearance of excess skin above the eye. This will result in a much more refreshed appearance. When only eyelid skin is removed, the eyebrows may continue to move downward, and much of the benefit of eyelid surgery can be erased. Be sure that your surgeon is familiar with the full range of eyelid and brow lift procedures so that you can obtain the very best results from your surgery.
