What is Breast Implant Exchange?

If your breasts do not look the way you had hoped following breast surgery, there is help. Dr. Gal has extensive experience correcting breast deformities and revising prior breast surgeries.

Breast implant exchange, or breast implant revision surgery, is a surgical procedure that involves removing the patient’s existing breast implants and replacing them with new ones. This procedure can help correct and improve the appearance of the breasts after a previous breast augmentation, help achieve your desired breast size and shape and update your breast implants. You can even swap out your saline implants to silicone implants that feel softer and have a lower rupture risk.

If your breast augmentation has not lived up to your expectations, contact Peoria Cosmetic Surgery and Dr. Gal will be happy to help you achieve a satisfying look.

What Complications Can Revision Breast Surgery Treat?

For most women, their breast augmentation is a rewarding experience, and they enjoy their naturally enhanced look for many years to come. But as with any surgery, unsatisfactory outcomes are possible.

In addition to removing and replacing your old breast implants with new ones, breast implant revision surgery can also involve removal of thick scar tissue around the implant, revise the shape and location of the implant and improve your current results with the addition of a lift procedure.

  • Implant malposition. The implant is too low, “bottoming out,” or too far by your armpits.
  • Implant rupture. One or both implant shells break causing a misshapen breast and silicone leak or complete deflation, in the case of saline implants.
  • Capsular contracture. The scar tissue around the implant, known as the “capsule,” becomes hard and thick causing breast misshape and a hard and even painful breast.
  • Size or shape discrepancies. If you want a larger or smaller implant or need a lift to tighten the loose breast skin surrounding the implant.

It’s important to note that breast implant exchange is a personal decision that should be made after careful consideration and discussion with a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon. At Peoria Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Gal will review each patient’s medical history and perform a physical examination to determine the best approach for each surgery, as no breast is the same and no patient’s goals are the same.

Breast Implant Exchange Candidates

Candidates for breast implant exchange are typically women who have had breast augmentation in the past and are looking to replace their existing implants with new ones. There are a variety of reasons why a woman may choose to undergo breast implant exchange, including:

  • Desire for a different size or shape.
  • Implant complications: implant rupture, leakage, or displacement due to wear and tear or trauma.
  • Aging or changes in the body and breast: the breast tissue may lose volume, change shape or become loose around the implant.
  • Implant malposition: bottoming out, lateral displacement, or symmastia.
  • Capsular contracture: when the scar tissue surrounding the implant tightens, causing the breast to become hard and distorted.
  • Cosmetic reasons: to achieve a more natural or symmetrical look of the breast.
