What is a Brachioplasty?

As we get older, our upper arm skin can become loose and flabby. This is especially apparent, if you have lost a lot of weight. In the heat of Arizona, feeling embarrassed wearing short-sleeve or sleeveless garments is a real problem. Unfortunately, no amount of tricep-curls or push-ups will help stretched out, sagging skin.

What can help? A brachioplasty, also known as an arm lift, is a surgical procedure that is designed to improve the appearance of the upper arms by removing loose, sagging skin and excess fatty deposits. This procedure will help re-contour your arms to a more firm and slender appearance and help restore your confidence at the same time.

Brachioplasty Candidates:

Candidates for brachioplasty, or arm lift surgery, are typically men or women who are bothered by excess skin or fat in their upper arms and want to achieve a more toned and contoured appearance.
Some common reasons why a person may be a good candidate for a brachioplasty include:

  • Excess skin and/or fat
  • Weight loss
  • Aging
  • Cosmetic reasons

It’s important to note that a brachioplasty is a major surgical procedure that involves recovery time and should not be considered a substitute for weight loss or a healthy lifestyle. A consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon can help determine whether a person is a good candidate for a brachioplasty based on their individual needs and circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

Your Consultation

Before the procedure, you will meet and have a consultation with Dr. Shaili Gal to discuss your goals and expectations. Dr. Gal will listen to your goals, review your medical history and answer all your questions. Once your medical history is reviewed, Dr. Gal will perform a physical examination to determine the best approach for your surgery.

If you are bothered by fullness in your arms and have good skin elasticity, Dr. Gal may recommend liposuction only of your arms. However, if you have loose, saggy skin, brachioplasty will be the best approach. If you have a combination of the two, Dr. Gal may recommend a combination of liposuction with your brachioplasty procedure. This will best be determined at your consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Shaili Gal.

Your Brachioplasty Procedure

Your upper arm contour can be dramatically improved with a brachiplasty procedure. The procedure is done with anesthesia and can be combined with liposuction. To remove the excess, sagging skin, an incision is made along the underside of your upper arm.

The length of this incision is determined by the amount of loose skin and can be limited to the armpit and mid-upper arm to the full length of the upper arm. The scars will fade over time and are hidden by their placement. The scars will only be visible if you raise your bare arms above shoulder level.

Recovery after Surgery

After having an arm lift procedure, you will be placed in a compression garment and be sent home the same day of surgery to recover in comfort. Most patients experience minimal bruising and swelling, but can be back to work by 5 days to a week. You will return to your regular exercise and lifting routine at 4 weeks.
