What Is Dysport?

Dysport is an injectable neuromodulator made from botulinum toxin type A. When a small amount is injected into a specific muscle, it temporarily reduces that muscle’s ability to contract. Lines that form from repeated expressions, like the furrow between your brows when you concentrate or the crinkle around your eyes when you smile, soften significantly because the underlying muscle is no longer pulling as hard.

Dysport has been FDA-approved for cosmetic use and has a well-established safety record built over years of clinical use. Treatments take about 20 minutes, require no downtime, and results look natural because the muscles are not frozen, just relaxed.
It is worth noting that Dysport and Botox work the same way but are different formulations with different unit dosing. They are not interchangeable by unit count, but both are safe and effective options for treating dynamic wrinkles. Your provider will recommend the right choice based on the areas you want to address.

What Does Dysport Treat?

Dysport is most commonly used to address dynamic wrinkles, which are lines caused by muscle movement rather than sun damage or volume loss. The areas most patients come in for include:
• Frown lines between the brows (the 11s or glabellar lines)
• Horizontal forehead lines
• Crow’s feet at the outer corners of the eyes
• Brow lift
• Neck Bands
• Along the jaw (Nefertiti lift) for a subtle lift effect
Depending on your goals, Dysport may also be used for a subtle lip flip, chin dimpling, or neck bands. Dr. Gal will let you know which areas are right for your anatomy during your consultation.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Dysport is a good fit for adults who are bothered by expression lines and want to look refreshed without surgery. Most patients are somewhere in their late 20s to 60s, but there is no specific age requirement. What matters most is that your lines are dynamic (meaning they appear or deepen with movement) and that you have realistic expectations.

Dysport is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a neuromuscular condition, or have had a reaction to botulinum toxin products in the past. Dr. Gal will review your health history at your consultation to make sure it is a safe choice for you.

How Does It Work? What to Expect

Your appointment starts with a brief consultation where Dr. Gal evaluates your facial anatomy, discusses your goals, and marks the precise injection points. The treatment itself takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

A series of small injections are placed into the targeted muscles using very fine needles. Most patients describe the sensation as a quick pinch. A topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand if you prefer. Afterward, there may be minor redness, swelling, or small bumps at the injection sites, all of which typically fade within a couple of hours.
There is no significant downtime. Most patients return to their normal activities right away. We do ask that you avoid vigorous exercise, lying flat, and touching or massaging the treated areas for the first four hours after your appointment.

Results: When Will I See Them and How Long Do They Last?

Dysport typically begins to take effect within two to three days. Full results are visible around 7 days after treatment.

Results last approximately three to four months for most patients. With consistent maintenance treatments, many people find their results hold up a bit longer over time as the treated muscles gradually become less active.

Dysport Safety

Dysport has a strong safety track record when administered by a trained, licensed medical professional. The most common side effects are minor and temporary, including bruising, redness, or mild swelling at the injection site. Rare side effects such as drooping of the eyelid or brow are almost always linked to improper injection technique and resolve on their own as the product wears off.

At Peoria Cosmetic Surgery, Dysport is administered by double-board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Shaili Gal. During your consultation, she will walk you through what to expect and answer any questions you have before any treatment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dysport

How is Dysport different from Botox?

Both are botulinum toxin type A products that work by temporarily relaxing facial muscles, but they are different formulations and are dosed differently. The units are not interchangeable, so Dr. Gal will recommend the right product and dose for your anatomy. Both deliver natural-looking results in experienced hands.

How long does Dysport last?

Most patients enjoy their results for three to four months. With regular maintenance appointments, many people find their results last a bit longer over time because the treated muscles become conditioned to relaxing.

When will I start to see results?

You will begin to notice softening within two to three days, with the full effect visible around 7 days. We schedule a one-week check-in so we can fine-tune anything if needed.

Does getting Dysport hurt?

The needles are very fine and most patients find the injections feel like a quick pinch. If you are concerned about discomfort, we can apply a topical numbing cream before your treatment.

Is there any downtime?

There is no significant downtime. Minor redness or swelling at the injection sites usually fades within a few hours. We recommend skipping intense exercise and avoiding lying flat for the first four hours after your appointment.

How many units will I need?

That depends on which areas you’re treating, the strength of your muscles, and the level of correction you want. Dr. Gal will assess this at your consultation and give you a clear recommendation and cost estimate before anything is done.

Is Dysport safe?

Yes. Dysport is FDA-approved for cosmetic use and has a long, well-documented safety record. Serious side effects are uncommon and are most often associated with treatment by an untrained provider. At Peoria Cosmetic Surgery, all injections are performed by Dr. Gal.

Can I combine Dysport with fillers?

Absolutely, and many patients do. Neuromodulators like Dysport relax muscles to soften lines, while fillers restore volume and contour. They work well together and can be done in the same appointment. Dr. Gal will let you know if a combined approach makes sense for your goals.

How much does Dysport cost?

Dysport is priced per unit and average units per treatment are 75 Units. At Peoria Cosmetic Surgery, Dysport is priced at $4/Unit.
