What Is A Brow lift
By the time we are in our mid-thirties, our eyebrows start to drop. As we age, this descent of our eyebrows becomes more obvious with the following consequences: hooding of the skin above our upper eyelids, “crow’s feet” wrinkles at the outer edge of our eyes, a narrowed appearance of our eyes, horizontal forehead lines, and vertical frown lines; all tending to make us look older, sadder, or angrier.
A browlift is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to elevate the eyebrows, reducing the hooding above the upper eyelids, making the eyes appear more open, improving the crow’s feet, forehead creases, and frown lines; a facelift for the forehead.
How Do We Do Our Brow lifts?
While there are many ways to elevate the eyebrows surgically, at this time, we prefer what is termed a “tricophytic subcutaneous browlift. In non-medical jargon, this browlift is where we make an incision at the hairline across the uppermost edge of the forehead. The skin of the forehead is then gently undermined off the muscle beneath from the incision to the level of the eyebrows and elevated, lifting the skin of the forehead and the eyebrows to the new higher position. The excess skin resulting at the hairline is then trimmed at the incision in the hairline and that incision is sutured closed.
The result of this elegantly simple browlift is very pleasing reduction of any preexisting crow’s feet, horizontal wrinkles across the bridge of the nose and the forehead and a desirable elevation of the eyebrows. The eyes appear more open and more youthful. The scar from the incision across the hairline at the upper end of the forehead is made in a special way so that it is nearly invisible when it heals. Unlike other popular browlifts such as the endoscopic forehead lift, there is no bone drilling or screws placed in the skull nor any lengthening of the distance between the brows and the hairline.
Where Is The Eyebrow Surgery Done?
All our browlifts are done in our own accredited in-office surgical suite in Peoria, Arizona.
What Type Of Anesthesia Is Used for the Brow lift?
We perform our browlifts under local anesthesia with conscious sedation. We do not use general anesthesia. This combination of conscious sedation and local anesthesia is overall significantly “lighter” hence safer than general anesthesia with substantially less postoperative nausea and vomiting (as much as 40% less). Our anesthesia does not require an anesthesiologist, a cost savings for you.
Is The Brow lift Procedure Painful?
No. Apart from the initial injections of local anesthesia taking a few minutes, less painful than a dentist numbing your mouth, there is no pain during the procedure. Most of our patients drift off to sleep during the surgery, rousing when it is concluded. Following surgery, pain is negligible.
What Is The Recovery Time? How Much Time Off From Work Will I Need?
Recovery from our browlift is very quick and without complications. Our patients are able to be up and around immediately after surgery. We remove our sutures seven to ten days after the procedure. For most patients, any swelling in the forehead or the cheeks has disappeared by that time. Almost all of our patients are quite presentable prior to suture removal, usually by the fourth or fifth postoperative day and can resume most light activities by then. Any bruising that forms is usually visible under the lower eyelids on either the side of the nose and disappears quickly.
Many patients can return to sedentary work in three or four days after the procedure.
Do I Need To Stay In A Hospital Or Convalescent Facility After the Brow Lift Surgery?
A browlift is an outpatient surgery. Following the surgery and after a short stay in our recovery room, our browlift patients are discharged directly home, accompanied by a responsible adult. For those who have no one to help them for the first night following surgery, or for those who prefer it, we can arrange an overnight stay in a nearby convalescent home for a minimal additional charge.
What Follow-Up Visits Are Required Following Brow Lift Surgery?
We see all our browlift patients the day after surgery. On the next visit, a week to ten days after surgery, the sutures are removed. After this, usually no visits are necessary until a month after surgery.
What Kind Of Dressings Or Bandages Are Used After Brow Lift Surgery?
After browlift surgery, we place a light dressing around the forehead overnight and remove it the next day.
How Long Does The Brow lift Procedure Take?
A browlift alone takes about 90 minutes to complete during which most of our patients drift off to sleep.
Are There Any Risks Or Complications Of Browlift Surgery?
There are risks and complications associated with any surgery. However, when our simple instructions are followed, they are fortunately few and far between. Infection and bleeding are possible, but are very rare, as is damage to the nerves that elevate the eyebrows.
Our overall safety record to date is impeccable and our complication rate almost nil.
Can A Brow lift Be Combined With Other Facial Cosmetic Surgical Procedures?
It is rare that we do not combine our browlift with some other facial cosmetic surgical procedure. Most commonly, we target excess skin above the eyelids at the same time (blepharoplasty), a facelift, and/or fractional CO2 laser resurfacing to the face.
What Kind Of Result Can I Expect, When Will I See Them, And How Long Will These Results Last?
Our goal is to elevate your eyebrows to where they were when you were ten or more years younger, not altering your appearance, but rather refreshing and rejuvenating it.
Often, the very dramatic improvement from the browlift is apparent within the first week after surgery. How you look a month or two after surgery is how you will look for the next five years or so depending on your personal habits and heredity.
