What is J-Plasma Body Contouring and Skin Tightening?

J-Plasma body contouring and skin tightening is a revolutionary new minimally invasive procedure that both tightens and contours lax skin anywhere on the body. This is accomplished this by means of special device that delivers “helium plasma’’ energy through tiny incisions to the undersurface of the skin in those areas to be tightened. J-Plasma can be done as a stand-alone procedure or as is more often the case, in conjunction with liposuction. The combination of fat removal with liposuction followed by skin tightening by J-Plasma yields dramatic improvements to body contours that were previously unobtainable.

How is the Procedure Done?

After infiltrating the area to be treated with the same local tumescent anesthesia that we use for liposuction, tiny incisions are made in the area to be tightened and contoured. If liposuction is to be done as well as J-Plasma, the liposuction is done first. Then through these incisions, a special device delivers helium plasma energy to the undersurface of the skin tightening and contouring it in a controlled fashion. The helium plasma energy not only tightens the skin immediately but also stimulates the production of collagen in the treated skin so that improvement continues for months after the procedure.

As with all our surgeries, we perform the J-Plasma procedure in our accredited office-based surgery with local tumescent anesthesia and mild conscious sedation allowing for safe and pain free procedure.

What Is Helium Plasma Energy?

Helium is normally inert non-reactive gas; however when it is ionized with radiofrequency energy it becomes very reactive, a state that scientists refer to as “plasma”. When the helium plasma contacts the undersurface of the skin, it tightens it instantly to a degree that is unmatched by other current technologies such as ultrasound, radiofrequency or lasers. Additionally, the helium plasma is much cooler than laser energy, making it far less potentially harmful. We now have an FDA approved device that can deliver helium plasma in an entirely safe and effective way for skin tightening almost anywhere on the body—arms, neck, torso, back, abdomen, thighs, etc.

What Happens after J-Plasma? When Will I See the Results?

Improvements in both body contouring and skin tightening are noticeable within one to two weeks as soon as the swelling subsides. Within a month following the procedure there is often a dramatic improvement. The helium energy stimulates collagen formation over three to six months after the procedure as a result of which you can expect the treated areas to look better and better.

What is the Downtime from J-Plasma?

Mild swelling and light bruising can be expected after this procedure. These usually disappear in 7 to 14 days. If liposuction has been done in conjunction with J-Plasma, there is no additional healing time than with liposuction alone. We use the same post liposuction garments with J-Plasma and as is the case with liposuction you can return to light sedentary work within two to three days. Post procedure pain is minimal, usually relieved with over-the-counter analgesics such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

What are the Complications of J-Plasma? Is it Safe?

J-Plasma used as described has proved to be an extremely safe and very effective procedure to date with few if any complications reported. Unlike other energy modalities placed under the skin such as laser, ultrasound and radiofrequency, J- Plasma does not heat the outer surface of the skin and therefore there is no risk of burns. Additionally, the application of helium energy under the skin is much quicker than the older forms of energy delivery mentioned above making for shorter procedure time.

Where on the Body Can J-Plasma Be Done? Where is it Particularly Effective?

J-Plasma can be used just about anywhere on the body where the skin is loose and needs tightening. Where it shines is tightening the sagging skin of the upper arms, the neck, the back skin bulging under the bra, the flanks and the abdomen. Those women who have hanging lower abdominal skin following pregnancy or weight loss for whom liposuction alone is not enough and a tummy tuck for one reason or another is too much, J-Plasma can often provide a very satisfying improvement. Effectively tightening saggy upper arm skin has always been difficult without surgical excision (brachioplasty); now in many cases J-Plasma added to liposuction can afford a no scar, minimal downtime, alternative.

Who is a Candidate for the J-Plasma Body Contouring and Skin Tightening?

Anyone for whom loose, lax skin has become a problem, and for whom surgery is either feasible should consider J-Plasma skin tightening.

Future Applications of J-Plasma Technology

J-Plasma is a brand new procedure with a bright future. We have just scratched the surface of the potential uses for this breakthrough technology. Surgeons around the world impressed by its ease of use, lack of complications and dramatic results are starting to extend its applications to conditions that previously required surgery such as lifting sagging breasts, entire faces, inner thighs and buttocks, etc. We have been using J-Plasma in conjunction strategically placed sutures in the face and neck to offer our patients as a minimally invasive alternative to a traditional facelift.
