Cool Lipo: The Minimally Invasive Treatment
for Excessive Underarm Sweating

Until now, treatment for this condition was either temporary, ineffective or both. Home remedies and aluminum-based antiperspirants are unreliable and messy. More recently injections of neurotoxins such as Botox into the armpit area have proven effective in reducing sweating for upwards of twelve to eighteen months in some patients. However, this treatment is uncomfortable and expensive, requiring at least one vial or 100 units of Botox per side and costing as much as $3000 for just temporary relief.
A very innovative plastic surgeon in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. Guillermo Blugerman discovered that using a laser liposuction fiber under the armpit skin, heating the undersurface of the skin there inactivated the sweat glands on a permanent basis. This minimally invasive procedure offers a real alternative for those suffering from this condition.
What is the Cool Lipo treatment for excessive underarm sweating? How is the procedure done?
The Cool Lipo device is a Nd:Yag laser designed to help improve the results of tumescent liposuction. Laser energy is passed through a very thin fiber to the target tissue, heating it to a specified temperature. In the procedure for excessive sweating, the area to be treated in the underarm is marked and infiltrated with local anesthetic. Then a tiny incision is made to introduce the fiber under the armpit skin after which it is passed back and forth throughout the treatment area heating the sweat glands there to a desired temperature. The sweat glands heated appropriately by the laser are permanently inactivated and cease to produce sweat.
Do I need sedation for this treatment?
Sedation for this procedure is optional. We can easily perform our Cool Lipo treatment for excessive underarm sweating very comfortably using local anesthetic alone. However, for those who prefer it, we provide a very light, safe twilight sleep for no additional charge.
Is the procedure painful? Are there any complications?
Other than the mild discomfort of putting the local anesthetic under the skin in the treated area, there is no pain either during or after the procedure. Other than an occasional tiny burn in the overlying armpit skin that heals spontaneously, there are no complications of this Cool Lipo treatment in our experience to date.
What is the Recovery Time?
Recovery time is almost immediate. A light dry dressing is placed over the treatment site overnight to catch any local anesthetic that might drain. The tiny incisions to introduce the fiber heal quickly. Patients can return to regular activities within a day or so of the treatment. There is almost never any significant pain and the excessive sweating stops immediately after the treatment.
How effective is the Cool Lipo Treatment for Excessive Underarm Sweating?
For most patients, one treatment results in a permanent cure. For a few patients, an additional treatment is necessary for a complete resolution of excessive sweating. The tiny minority of patients with axillary hyperhidrosis who fail three treatments will not benefit further Cool Lipo procedures.
